About Dr Samen

Highly experienced, with a personal approach

Dr Wafa Samen has had more than 25 years’ experience as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, having taken her internship at Kirkuk Hospital in 1983. She has practiced for over 20 years in Australia, and undertook her Masters in Reproductive Medicine at UNSW in 2010 so she could also support her patients with infertility concerns.

Originally from the Kirkuk region of Iraq, Dr Samen is fluent in both Turkish and Arabic and can consult with you in those languages if you prefer. She emigrated to Australia in 1992 with her husband, who practices as a General Practitioner in Sydney, and she has three grown-up children and five grand children.

Surgical and diagnostic expertise

During her surgical residency in Iraq, Dr Samen worked with a plastic surgeon and realised the impact gynaecological plastic surgery could have on some women’s lives, especially for women dealing with the impact of multiple births in quick succession.

She undertook additional training to combine this expertise with her chosen field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, giving her the rare ability to also help patients overcome problems such as uterine and vaginal wall prolapse, stress incontinence, or the changing size and shape of the vagina following birth. This is a surgical specialisation that requires significant experience and a delicate hand.

Dr Samen has practised at The Medical City Hospital in Baghdad where she received her specialism in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which at the time was classified as the top Hospital in the Middle East. Marmara University Hospital in Turkey. In Australia, she has practised Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Liverpool Hospital, Mater Mother's Hospital (Brisbane) & Fairfield and Bankstown Public Hospitals.

She currently sees patients at, St George Private Hospital and Auburn Private Medical practice, and has been a Fertility Specialist with IVFAustralia, Australia’s largest network of fertility clinics, since 2010.
